CCSC Introduces New Safe Route to School Initiative with Community Support
Crawfordsville Community School Corporation, in partnership with the Montgomery County Wellness Coalition and the City of Crawfordsville, is pleased to announce the designation of a new Safe Route to School serving Hoover Elementary School and Crawfordsville Middle School. During a recent Crawfordsville Board of Public Works & Safety meeting, Mayor Todd Barton officially declared the route a Safe Route to School. Made possible through a Health by Design grant, the designated route includes Danville Avenue, Prospect Street, East Chestnut Street, Vandalia Street, Hughes Street, South Elm Street, and East South Boulevard.
As part of the initiative, new yard signs will be placed throughout the designated neighborhood corridor to remind drivers to slow down and watch for children walking and biking to school. The signs serve as a visible reminder that students may be traveling through the area and reflect the community's shared commitment to creating a safer, healthier environment for everyone.
CCSC will officially kick off the initiative with its first Safe Route Walk and Roll Rally on Tuesday, August 11, celebrating the new route and encouraging students, families, and community members to take part in safe, active transportation to school – “Meet us. Move together. Take the Safe Route!”
Together, these efforts will help create safer neighborhoods, healthier students, and stronger community connections. A Safe Route Rally will be scheduled each quarter of the upcoming school year. Future dates will be announced as they are finalized.
Walking and biking to school provide numerous benefits for students, including increased physical activity, the development of healthy lifelong habits, greater independence, and a positive start to the school day. By creating safer routes and encouraging active transportation, CCSC and its community partners hope to make walking and biking to school a safe and enjoyable option for more families.
The designated Safe Route to School is highlighted on a community map, allowing families to identify the recommended path to Hoover Elementary School and Crawfordsville Middle School. You can find the map on CCSC’s website at https://www.cville.k12.in.us/services/safe-routes-to-school
Community members can help support the initiative by:
- Slowing down and remaining alert during school arrival and dismissal times.
- Watching for children walking, biking, and crossing streets.
- Securing pets during arrival and dismissal times to help ensure students can travel without unexpected encounters.
- Keeping sidewalks clear year-round, especially during winter weather by promptly removing snow and ice.
- Encouraging children to walk or bike to school whenever it is safe to do so.
CCSC extends its sincere appreciation to Health by Design, Montgomery County Wellness Coalition, City of Crawfordsville, neighborhood residents, and local families for supporting this initiative and helping ensure every student has a safe journey to and from school.
Thank you for doing your part to help our students arrive at school safely
